I have first tried the 32bit version and also had startup issues. libapr-1 was bound to a "missing" gpsvc.dll. The DLL was in windows\system32, but it couldn't be opened (file not found, no matter which program I tried to open it with). Anyway...

Downloaded the 64bit version, unpacked it to drive D: and it won't start either.

With -debug I am getting this output:

Code:

I tried compiling it myself and that failed because the NULL device was missing on my system. After adding that painstakingly by hand apache now is up and running.

Your error looks similar to this old post.

With Apache 2.2.11 you would get the message: "Could not set child process stdout" instead of the Apache 2.0 message: "Unable to connect child stdout to NUL" for the same problem.

Unfortunately, the previous poster never explained how his NUL device driver went missing, so it is hard to know if your situation is really similar.

I don't know how it went missing either, the driver was there, but there were no registry entries for it. Using nul from the shell always resulted in a "file not found" error.

When I tried to build apache from scratch at least Visual Studio told me that the NULL device wasn't installed so then I was able to find more information. It was listed in Device Manager, but had problems so it couldn't start. Adding the missing registry entries was a tiring process as well since I had to change ownership and permissions of the affected root keys before I was allowed to import them.

Way to spend an evening Laughing That old Apache error message would have sped up that process immensely.

Cheers,
Rainer

Oh, and the DLL error messages went away as well. They had added more to the confusion than being helpful.
