Nope, I don't see a long term reason for HHVM to be around. Considering PHP 7 is already very fast and HHVM is not considered the standard and requires a lot of hacking to get certain extensions and templates to work (so I've heard at least). Another major reason is that HHVM doesn't support ioncube, and unfortunately some of the applications I use are encoded with ioncube
I'm quite confident that PHP will continue to work on performance and at some point performance will be on pair or better than HHVM. PHP is already faster in a few benchmarks and in most benchmarks the differences are quite small. Although I'd like to see some Joomla 3.5 / 3.6 benchmarks. |
