Well, I got tired of messing with gnu make and decided to see what I could do with nmake. The problem of course is the ripping the version out of the configure.ac to generate the necessary version header.

The gnu make file uses cygwin, msys and it's own built in functions to do this and other things it needs. I did it with perl, and it generates what is needed including a makefile for nmake.

Mine requires perl but so do other projects I can think of so most of us have it. I cannot say as much for cygwin/msys.

I hope some people will give it a try and let me know what they think.
