Thanks for the replies guys.

The SMTP servers i have tried out in the past (free crappy ones) have mainly been set back by problems such as if the mail address was false they would just spend ages trying to send and then just crash. Do either of these programs have any problems like this and how do you like using them?

I am currently using the SMTP server in IIS from microsoft. Its stable -so far- but i would really like something a tad more advanced.

Cheers.

My favorite is Surgemail, see http://netwinsite.com/ I was invloved in the development. I have even a forum at http://www.land10.nl/surgemail/

If you want an easier to install mail serrver you can use Sambar, see http://www.sambarserver.info .

I use Sambar, http://www.sambar.com, and Steffen offers a support site for this one too at http://www.sambarserver.info.

It is not the most powerful mail server on earth but for the price you get a decent web server, a very -very- stable SMTP with great spam protection. Steffen uses Surge, it is on par with Exchange (even better in some ways) from what I have read about it, but it is about as difficult as Exchange so not a good choice for the newbie like me.

Sambar also comes with a chron task scheduler, which I make very good use of to run my stats on Apache, to monitor things on Apache and to run some system level stuff. Also, you can set up SSL so dang easy in Sambar, and you can have SSL on multiple sites with one IP. So creating a secure login for adminstrating and checking email via webmail is oh so easy.

My mail server has over 600 active and busy email accounts. It has not crashed on me once in .... well I just don't recall the last time it ever crashed on me. Like I said, not the perfect mail server, and it aint no Surge or Exchange, but for the price and all of the other gooides, it is for me a very good choice.
