| my web server is working locally and externally. people can access the web page be typing the domain name ie www.domain.com  I a am using GoDaddy for my DNS servers. at this point this is how the setting looks at DNS server. the @ is the same as the domain name.

 Host 	Points To
 @ 	74.186.28.227 	1 Hour
 
 
 what i am trying to do is when people type mail.domain.com the index page that is inside in a specific folder will be displayed. I know that I have to configure both apache and my DNS server.  What is a CNAME

| For your mail server you need to configure the mx record 
 How to do that you should read the FAQ from GoDaddy
